What’s even better than watching social media videos of people creating awesome art?
Creating art yourself!
I love to paint, draw, play around with various art supplies, and write. Creating makes me feel alive and growing. It helps me unwind and is just plain fun. It’s also one of the few ways as a nerdy introvert I’m comfortable expressing myself.
Creativity is also something I neglected for a while, in favor of more practical things like paying the bills, keeping my house clean(ish), feeding the dogs, worrying about what other people think, and a long list of “stuff” that always seemed to get in the way.
Not all the “stuff” was bad, but it crowded out what I really love to do.
This is where I share my journey of making time and space in my physical and mental world to create.
If you love to watch videos on Facebook, YouTube, etc… of people creating awesome, beautiful things you’re in the right place.
If you’re like me, you love to watch these videos because there’s something inside of you that wants to do it too. Maybe you tell yourself you’re not creative enough, not talented enough, and/or don’t have enough time, but you can, and you do!
This is where I share how I, you, and just about anyone can use the art of simplicity to cut down on superfluous “stuff” in life to make time for the things that really matter. Things like creativity.
This is also where I share my struggles with fear. Fear about things I do not being “good enough,” including art. And I also share some tips on how to break creative projects down into “doable” parts that can fit into life.
I have a random mix of education and experience. I spent a year at the Kansas City Art Institute, have a degree in accounting, a cosmetology licence, and I homeschooled my children from preschool through high school.
My current gig is corporate payroll, which is a good fit for my nerdy, number crunching, organizational side, but the stress and daily grind can also drain my brain and make it hard for my creative side to do it’s thing.
After “going back to work” when my kids were all graduated (as if raising a family isn’t work in itself… but I digress) I rarely took time for creative projects for several years. There just never seemed to be the time, the energy, or the confidence to do so.
And to put it simply and bluntly… it really sucked! I would watch videos of all these other people creating beautiful things and dejectedly wish I could “do something awesome like that.”
Boiled down, it was all excuses… and self pity… and eventually I got tired of my own BS that somehow I “couldn’t” do it… then I did it.
Sometimes creating comes naturally and easily. Often it’s doesn’t. But it’s always worth it. I believe we are created by an epic-ly creative God, and that we are created in His image. So when we are creative I believe we tap into an essential part of who we are.
So welcome to my little nook of the digital world, and my journey to create art, simplicity, and courage. I hope you stick around and find inspiration and direction for your own journey.
